Jackson County Prosecutors have charged William Morrison, a Sugar Creek man on parole for involuntary manslaughter, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the May disappearance and death of 45-year-old Jonathan Brown of Independence. A cadaver dog alerted to a newly poured concrete slab in the basement of a residence wired to Morrison; the body was later recovered from that slab, with death ruled a homicide. Jackson County

With the $60 million Series 2026A new-money bonds — authorized by voters at the April 2026 school-bond election — and the operating levy both on tonight's agenda, this is one of the board's most consequential meetings of the year. District finances also remain tied to the Nebius data-center deal, whose PILOT (payment-in-lieu-of-tax) revenue the city's own analysis projected would stream a large share toward the district over the deal's 20-year term.

The Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners meets Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 1:30 p.m. (in person at 215 N. Liberty St. or via Zoom) to hand-count the 1,650 votes and certify results of the Sept. 1 recall of First District Councilman John Perkins — the first recall of an Independence city councilmember in city history. With 100% of precincts reporting, 68.05% voted "yes." Once certified and confirmed by the City Clerk, the seat moves to the council, which is expected to take it up at its Sept. 21 meeting. City Manager Troy Anderson recommends a Feb. 2, 2027 primary and April 6, 2027 general to fill the seat, timed to share election costs; the recall itself cost an estimated $164,000. Perkins, who was elected to serve through June 2028, says he stands by his March vote and won't fight the result.

Independence voters will decide Nov. 3 on a $19.9 million general obligation bond to preserve five city-owned historic buildings — the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, Vaile Mansion, Truman Memorial Building, Old Fire Station One, and the 1827 Log Courthouse — along with funding to create a 20-year business plan for the sites. The council placed it on the ballot 7–0 on Aug. 17. If it passes, residents get free admission to all five sites for the 20-year bond term; the levy would run about 14.5 cents per $100 of assessed value in year one, dropping to ~7.6 cents after. As a municipal GO bond submitted on a general election day, it needs a four-sevenths (57.14%) supermajority under Missouri's Article VI, Section 26(b) — a bar a similar $12 million measure narrowly missed (55.4%) in 2025. City officials warn that without funding the sites may be at risk of eventual sale.
The March vote that triggered the recall granted Dutch AI firm Nebius roughly $6 billion in tax breaks for a $150 billion, ~400-acre "AI factory" near Missouri Route 78 and Little Blue Parkway, now under construction. The city has since passed a 180-day moratorium (approved July 6) on new data-center and battery-storage zoning, which is not retroactive and doesn't apply to Nebius or the planned $107 million Patmos data center. Independence is being watched nationally as the earliest of dozens of data-center-related recall efforts to reach a ballot. NBC News

Severe storms with 60 mph winds and penny-size hail toppled vendor tents and booths on the Independence Square Sunday night, forcing organizers to send vendors home for the final day, Monday, Sept. 7 — the carnival rides and games stayed open. The NWS reported the storms whipped up on short notice. The decision, organizers said, put safety first "as crews continue to assess and address storm damage throughout the area." Several out-of-town vendors, including a walking-taco operator from Branson, said the sudden cancellation after a "rain or shine" contract hurt — but cleanup crews worked through the night. The 54th annual festival had debuted a new 6 p.m.–6 a.m. minor curfew that ended at noon Monday.
